THIS IS A COMPLETE GENUINE RARE UK ORIGINAL AND IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO BUY A COMPLETE EXAMPLE OF A HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE AND RARE VINYL ALBUM.

An exceptional pressing that plays with perfect pitch from start to finish.

Gentle Giant was the first album of British progressive rock band Gentle Giant, released in 1970.

Gentle Giant were an English progressive rock band active between 1970 and 1980. The band were known for the complexity and sophistication of music and the varied musical skills of its members; - all of the band members, except Malcolm Mortimore, were multi-instrumentalists. Although not commercially successful, they did achieve a cult following and are now highly collectable.

The band's onetime stated aim was to "expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of becoming very unpopular", although this stance was to alter significantly with time.

Gentle Giant's music was considered complex even by progressive rock standards, drawing on a broad swath of music including folk, soul, jazz, and classical music. Unlike many of their progressive rock contemporaries, their "classical" influences ranged beyond the Romantic and incorporated medieval, baroque, and modernist chamber music elements. The band also had a taste for broad themes for their lyrics, drawing inspiration not only from personal experiences but from philosophy and the works of both François Rabelais and R. D. Laing.

In 2015 they were recognised with the lifetime achievement award at the Progressive Music Awards. Their vinyl albums are now highly collectable and the original Vertigo pressings are increasingly sought after amongst collectors and audiophiles.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Yes – great sound quality throughout.

This great record plays through with superb 1st press power and clarity, with absolutely Top Audio throughout, it would be hard to ever better. The tones are beautifully defined in this original UK pressing, with a great depth of sound and each channel being clearly defined, with a warm rich sound that is infinitely superior to later pressings. There is barely any light occasional static and needless to say there are no obvious sound blemishes, no loud pops, clicks or distortion.

A thick quality pressing with the wider 1st pressed grooves means that the audio really packs a punch. Strong, undistorted sound the channels are clean and unstressed. Great audio with no obvious interference to distract form the enjoyment of this classic record. It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity! I will give a detailed account below:

This great sounding 1st stereo pressing starts with 'Giant ', a diverse track that can still be plagued by crackle, hiss and static. Here there is some light static during the run ins and the very quiet short intro, but it is very quiet by any standards. The whole track plays with great clear sound, the track plays superbly with not a single loud click or pop, and very little surface sound at all. There is a single light pop between tracks only. The quiet solo in the middle sounds incredible, with bright, clear uninterrupted sound.

The intro to 'Funny Ways' also sounds very clear and the whole of the first side really plays with superb, clear audio throughout. There is very little surface sound, even on the long, quiet outro, and that is extremel y rare for any vinyl .

'Alucard' sounds great, with super clear audio, its such a complex track and prone to distortion and other noises. There is are no loud pops or clicks, and barely any light occasional static. A light single light pop at the very end and that's it. 'Isn't It Quiet and Cold?' comes in again with incredibly clear bright sound, I could detect barely any static and certainly no distortion. I can confirm this whole album plays without a hint of distortion what so ever. There one or two light tics in the middle of the track, and no loud pops or clicks. Superb.

'Nothing At All' brings in side 2. with bright, clear audio. There is some light static at the start and a single light pop, but its light by any standards, and there are no repeating tics, clicks or pops. The whole track and the long outro plays with great, clear audio.

The stunning 'Why Not', such a difficult track to find with clear sound, pays superbly. A great audio performance. There is very little light static during that quiet intro, and no pops, clicks or tics, just a light pop in the middle. A really incredible performance. 'The Queen' rounds off the album with another great performance, some very light occasional static only, the track is incredibly bright and clear.

A great example of this great vinyl and that would hard to better. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten. This is a great pressing, with no loud clicks or pops anywhere and certainly other obvious interference. There is barely any static anywhere on this vinyl and that is incredibly rare!

Great music with great clarity, I would give this great record a strict audio grading of EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT.

THE RECORD - Visual Grading

This is a great 1st pressing. A superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing.

Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original pressings . The record has great shine and is virtually unmarked. Under an intense spot light there are some faint inner sleeve removal marks.

This is an immaculate example, with clear grooves that deliver absolutely amazing audio clarity.

Graded at NEAR MINT .

A great all round Complete and Rare example of this RARE VINYL.

Super Clear Stereo mix, which packs amazing drive and punch.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever, when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE LABELS

Famous VERTIGO labels are in SUPERB Condition, no marks or writing, no discernible spindle wear. Great all round examples, with NO spindle traces at all.

Graded at NEAR MINT.

THE COVER

The unlaminated covers of Gentle Giant are almost impossible to find in even decent condition. They are nearly always scuffed and creased to a large extent, if not heavily worn, with white specs where the colour has been worn off across the flat surfaces. I don't need to tell you how rare it is to have a pressing that is has a solid square spine and un worn edges.

This great complete 1st pressing comes with the original unlaminated cover, which is a great example. The cover shows minimal handling wear, minimal creasing and corner wear, and has certainly no tears or serious defects. There is no feathering to the openings, which is very unusual, and virtually no indentations on the front or rear panel. There is no ring wear on the front or rear, just a few spot of very slight discolouration. The cover is square and un flattened and has not lost any of its shape. This is a really great example.

Graded at EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT PLUS.

THE INNER SLEEVE

Great Original 1st Press Poly lined Vertigo Swirl inner sleeve in great condition. Nice example, with some light creases only, there are no tears to the die cut centres, and NO seem splits. The sleeve is yellowed as these nearly always are, and the original print is slightly pale, as they came at times. This is a great fully intact example complete with its original poly liner.

Graded at EXCELLENT.

RARITY

Gentle Giant is a highly collectable vinyl, reaching increasingly high prices, and there are a number of good reasons. It is a classic piece of music, and has a number of brilliantly designed components, all if which are prone to wear. A matt cover, which is nearly always heavily marked and scuffed, a black and white inner sleeve, that is usually stained and torn, and a great vinyl that was nearly always played into submission. THIS IS A GREAT ALL ROUND ORIGINAL PRESSING. FINDING AN ORIGINAL UK VERTGO STEREO PRESS IN STUNNING ALL ROUND CONDITION IS EXTREMELY RARE.

THIS IS A GREAT PLAYING VINYL WITH SUPER BRIGHT CLEAR AUDIO, A SUPERB COVER AND INNER. ALL MAKING THIS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO OWN AN EXTREMELY RARE PIECE OF MUSICAL HISTORY!

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:

All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.

.

IMAGES and INFORMATION

We aim to give sufficient and accurate detail as possible, so that you know exactly what you are buying. Please let us know if you need any further information and we will be happy to oblige.
