Up for auction is one of the coveted Lexington Ave era Blue Notes: BLP 1501, Miles Davis' “Volume 1,” featuring Davis on trumpet, Jay Jay Johnson on trombone, Jimmy Heath on tenor sax, Jackie McLean on alto sax, Gil Coggins on piano, Percy Heath or Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Art Blakey or Kenny Clarke on drums. Tracks are Side One: 1) Tempus Fugit, 2) Kelo, 3) Enigma, 4) Ray’s Idea, 5) How Deep is the Ocean, 6) C.T.A. and Side Two: 1) Dear Old Stockholm, 2) Chance It, 3) Yesterdays, 4) Donna 5) C.T.A., 6) Would’n You
Released in January of 1956, Volume 1 was the first of two volumes of re-released Miles Davis material from earlier sessions. They were also the first releases in Blue Note's new 1500 series of 12" LPs. The music compiled on the two volumes came from three separate recording sessions between 1952 and 1954, and the compilations were a response to Davis winning “best trumpeter” in the 1955 Down Beat magazine readers poll.

SLEEVE: EX+/NM-, with no dog ears, no seam splits, colors and pictures are nice and bright. An acquisition date of March 31, 1956 is written in blue pen on the back of the jacket along with two check marks in the personnel listing.

RECORD: EX+/NM-, with very light scuffing from coming in and out of the sleeve and a faint, small needle trail in track 3 of side 2. Deep Grooves on both sides, Plastylite "ear" in dead wax, FLAT EDGES, cursive 767 Lexington Ave address on both sides. This is a true, rare first pressing.

I am a university professor of music here in the US who inherited this and other records (Blue Note, Norgran, Impulse!, Columbia, Prestige, Fantasy, Riverside, etc.) from a collector and former radio DJ a few years back. I am looking to sell off some of these records to collectors/audiophiles who can get more enjoyment out of them than I can.

Thanks for looking.
