ELTON DEAN S/T 1971 UK LP 1st PRESS ORANGE CBS 64539 SOFT MACHINE JAZZ PROG EX

kentgirl22 is pleased to offer for sale the following very rare original 1971 UK 1st pressing vinyl LP: ELTON DEAN "ELTON DEAN" RARE ORIGINAL 1971 UK CBS RECORDS ORANGE LABEL 1st PRESS VINYL LP Comes with original CBS advertising inner sleeve CAT.NO.S 64539 Matrix No's: S 64539-A1 stamped on Side 1 and S 64539-B1 stamped on Side 2 Sleeve - Shorepak by Shorewood Packaging Co.Ltd., England On offer here is an original and highly collectable 1971 UK CBS 1st PRESS jazz / prog LP, with A1-B1 stamped matrix references, by the famed Soft Machine musician ELTON DEAN. This is the extremely rare original UK CBS Orange label first pressing which is highly sought after these days. Great self-titled first solo album from the Soft Machine saxophonist recorded shortly after he formed the group Just Us. The LP is often referred to as the Just Us album. Released with very little publicity in late 1971 and almost immediately deleted due to minimal sales. This is one of the rarest Soft Machine related offshoots. On this superb progressive jazz album Elton Dean is helped out by a bunch of top-notch musicians including Mike Ratledge, Mark Charig, Phil Howard, Roy Babbington and others. Great playing throughout by this fantastic group. The album comes in its original 'Shorewood Packaging' unlaminated sleeve with upside down back cover art. Comes complete with correct original CBS advertising inner sleeve. Elton Dean's departure from Soft Machine in 1972 limited his commercial potential, but it launched his career as a bandleader and jazz collaborator. Before Soft Machine's Five was released, Dean's first solo LP, Elton Dean, was issued in 1971 as part of the Soft Machine contract with CBS. It features Phil Howard on drums, Neville Whitehead on bass, Mike Ratledge on keyboards, Mark Charig on cornet, and Roy Babbington on bass. The album was improvised in the studio, displaying a free jazz style not explored by Soft Machine. In 1972 Dean formed the Elton Dean Group, later changed to Just Us, featuring former Soft Machine sidemen Mark Charig and Nick Evans. Between 1973 and 1975 Dean went on tour with bassist Hugh Hopper's Monster Band and Chris MacGregor's Brotherhood of Breath, reaching out to a wider audience of African and European jazz fans. A long lost jazz classic! Tracks Side 1. 1. Ooglenovastrome 2. Something Passed Me By Side 2. 1. Blind Badger 2. Neo-Caliban Grides 3. Part: The Last Line-up / Musicians Elton Dean - Alto Sax, Saxello, Electric Piano Phil Howard - Drums Mark Charig - Cornet Neville Whitehead - Electric Bass Mike Ratledge - Electric Piano and Organ Roy Babbington - Bass Rare Original 1971 UK CBS Records Orange Label 1st Pressing Vinyl LP Record Label: CBS Records Catalogue No: 64539 Matrix No's: Side 1: S 64539-A1 Side 2: S 64539-B1 (Signifies original 1st pressing) Year: 1971 Made In England CONDITION Vinyl: EX (A lovely original 1971 UK Orange CBS first pressing which retains its full gloss and sheen. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Any surface marks and wispy hairlines are very fine and faint, seen under angled bright light. Visually a super record that should please most collectors. On playback the record delivers excellent audio throughout with only some occasional mild surface crackle near the beginning of side one, nothing serious and nothing to spoil your enjoyment of this rare original UK CBS label first pressing album) Labels: Mint- (Both labels are very clean, virtually mint, with no visible spindle marks and no wear around the hole area) LP Sleeve: EX- (A single unlaminated cover with matt finish. Printed and made in England by Shorewood Packaging. The sleeve has some mild ringwear, a few creases on the front and rear, mainly near the edges and three or four small scuffs. The top and bottom seams have some shelfwear rubbing. The spine is straight and solid with all printed text clear and fully legible. A near excellent example of this wear-prone 70’s cover) NOTES ELTON DEAN "SAME" CBS UK 1971 - SOFT MACHINE SOLO ORIGINAL ORANGE CBS S 64539 A1/B1 DAY OF ISSUE PRESSING LARGE TITLE CREDIT PRINTING ON LABEL - UPSIDE DOWN BACK COVER ISSUED WITHOUT ANY PUBLICITY IN LATE 1971 & QUICKLY DELETED DUE TO MINIMAL SALES ONE OF THE RAREST SOFT MACHINE RELATED OFFSHOOTS A fine free-spirited offering from Elton Dean and cohorts just after he left Soft Machine. Dean I think remains underrated. His sax playing is highly emotional. Mark Charigs' cornet playing too deserves a wider audience, providing a majestic counterpoint to the surrounding turmoil. Whether people consider this jazz or not is pretty much open to debate. Suffice to say that any fans of mid period soft machine (when they went more jazz-rock like on third or fourth album) should give this a listen. Mike Ratledge makes an appearance, (you can't mistake that dentist drill sound!) and there's also other softs alumni guesting. This album alone is a fitting tribute to the late, great Elton Dean, one of the most distinctive sounds in british jazz over the last 40 years. I remember seeing these guys in London a couple of times in the mid-70s. They were having fun and it came across.
