Axis: Bold as Love is the second studio album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Under pressure from their record company to follow-up the successful debut of their May 1967 album Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love was released on Track Records in the UK in December 1967. It reached #5 in the UK and later #3 in the US.

The album was recorded fulfilling the band's contract to produce two albums in 1967. It was not released in the USA until 1968 due to fears that it might disturb the sales of the first album. The music was varied and experimental, with a huge range of effects from Hendrix, and Noel Redding playing eight string bass on some tracks.

Many of the album's songs were composed with studio recording techniques in mind and as a result were rarely performed live. Only "Spanish Castle Magic" and "Little Wing" were performed regularly. The lyrics of "Spanish Castle Magic" were inspired by The Spanish Castle, a dance hall in what is now Des Moines, Washington near Seattle where Hendrix jammed with local rock groups during his high school years. On "Little Wing" Hendrix plays his guitar through a Leslie speaker for the first time (a revolving speaker which creates a wavering effect, that is typically used with electric organs).

The intro track, "EXP", begins with a few notes from "Stone Free" (although played one-half step down) and then features a conversation between Mitchell and Hendrix about UFOs, where Mitchell plays a radio host, and Hendrix plays an alien in the guise of a human named Mr. Paul Caruso, whose voice is gradually slowed down until he eventually takes off in his spaceship, much to the host's consternation.

A massively influential album and a pioneering piece of music, AXIS proves hugely successful and massively influential.

In 2003, the album was ranked #82 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Guitarist magazine named the album #7 on their list of "the most influential guitar albums of all time."

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Yes – brilliant! - TOP AUDIO throughout.

This classic Hendrix record plays with a super strong crisp sound, which is so hard to find on original pressings of 'Axis.' Strong, undistorted audio free of pops, clicks or distortion, this vinyl looks and sods like it has only been played twice. It has a brilliant vinyl sound, and what a great way to hear this classic Hendrix early masterpiece.

There is minimal sound between the tracks, and the vocal clarity is amazing, with all the layering being crystal clear. Great music with great clarity, and near impossible to find with this type of sound. This is an exceptional 1st stereo pressing, with incredible strong, undistorted audio, and a minimum of any static or surface sound. The channels are clean and unstressed. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals which come through with tremendous power. All the instruments and every breath of Hendrix's voice are bright and clear. I will give a detailed account below;

Axis Bold As Love is a complex and varied collection of music, and VERY hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'Up From the Skies .' This pressing has unbelievable strong undistorted audio, with super clear, strong audio throughout. NO interference, and NO loud pops, clicks or distortion. Any static is extremely low level, and that is unusual for any vinyl. It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity!

The album starts with a few seconds of ultra faint music, that is usually inaudible. Here it is very faint and very clear as its supposed to be in the 1st recording mix. There is a bit of very low level static during the long speaking part in the radio interview simulation of 'EXP.' Its a real test for Axis, as there is very little sound and any noise usually over powers the intro. Not here. It plays superbly with really bright audio. 'Up From the Skies' soothes in with amazing power and clarity; a complex track with extremely complex audio layering, all crystal clear. There is a some very faint surface static during the track but it is barely audible with no distinct tics, no pops or clicks anywhere, and certainly not a hint of distortion. A wonderful 'Spanish Castle Magic' sounds like it has only ever been played a couple of times, it is so clear. 'Wait Until Tomorrow' again plays beautifully, with that layering on the vocals in the chorus, nearly always lost, sounding superb here. 'Aint No Tellin' plays superbly with minimal static. Unbelievable, great clear sound, no pops and minimal surface sound, certainly nothing obtrusive or even that noticeable.

The ultra delicate classic 'Little Wing' sounds absolutely beautiful. There is a single light tic in the opening section, and then some very, very faint surface sounds, the kind found on all vinyl, but the track plays so clearly, amazing for such a quiet piece, and this track is nearly always heavily obstructed with static, even on little played examples. There are no pops, no clicks. 'If 6 Was 9' sounds incredible too. great separation with all the layering intact. Completely silent when the quiet section plays one third into the track. All the strange and very light percussion is crystal clear, it is quite unbelievable. A sensational first side, and absolutely fantastic example of a record that is so hard to find with even near decent audio.

'You Got Me Floating' powers in side two, again with crystal clear, perfect audio. There is a bit of light static between the tracks, but nothing in the music. the delicate 'Castles Made of Sand', plays with great clear sound, and just a touch of very occasional and very distant surface static. There are a couple of ultra-light tics but they are light. I tested it three times and I mean you have to have your head next to the speaker and be straining to hear them. 'She's So Fine' plays with amazing bright sound, the definition is amazing. I've heard numerous pressings of this track and nothing with clarity like this. No pops or intrusions at all. The largely quiet intro to 'One Rainy Wish' plays with beautiful clear sound, as with 'Little Miss Lover', super bright super clear sound with no pops or clicks at all. Rounding off the album with 'Bold as Love', it sounds great, with some very light occasional background static only noticeable in the quiet areas, and even there its hardly noticeable. Finishing off this great album, again with what can only be described as superb audio, a wonderful piece with great separation and clarity. Stunning.

I really enjoyed every second of this ultra rare 1st pressing. There are NO repeat tics, certainly not even a hint of distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever. This pressing plays with crisp clear audio throughout, with no loss of audio performance what so ever. Truly unbelievable audio experience. The tonal quality make this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.

This pressing has strong undistorted audio, with super clear sound and absolutely minimal background static. There is of course some light occasional static as found on all vinyl, but there is certainly no dominant interference, and NO loud pops or clicks. How incredibly RARE! It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity!

A great all round example of this classic vinyl.

staggering first stereo mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact. As AXIS was such a pioneering lp, they usually have been pretty abused or at least played a lot. Not this one! So rare to find a copy of Axis in this stunning condition!
I would have to give these vinyls a NEAR MINT sound grading.

THE RECORD – VISUAL GRADING

A superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl has been little played. In daylight this vinyl looks completely unmarked . It does have some faint sleeve removal marks, but the are barely visible and have no effect on the sound.

A stunning archive quality 1st pressing. Unbelievable to think this vinyl is over 40 years old!

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE LABELS

A stunning set of labels, deep matt these are so prone to wear and tear, finger prints and scuff marks. not hear, virtually un marked, just a couple of light spindle traces.

Grades at NEAR MINT.

THE COVER

This is a great example of the classic Hendrix album cover. An original 1st ever UK press cover, laminated an in gatefold format.

The original Track UK issue came in a gatefold sleeve with a large B&W portrait photo of the group by Donald Silverstein, spread over the inside. The British Track records art department had independently chosen to use the current fad for all things Indian to create the cover, and thus the album's cover has a photographed copy of a mass-produced religious poster of the Hindu devotional painting known as Viraat Purushan-Vishnuroopam with a small, superimposed painting of the group by Roger Law (from a photo portrait by Karl Ferris) blended in.

This is a stunning example of the original 1st press cover. The opening edge is square and un frayed. The Spine shows virtually no wear, and is one of the squarest examples I have seen. Very slight corner rubbing, the colours are so bright and true. This is a stunning all round example, with little to fault it.

EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT.

THE INNER

Comes with the original white British Patent No. inner sleeve. A rarity in itself, this is in great condition, with no seam splits, tears or stains. This is a superb example.

Grades at EXCELLENT PLUS.

RARITY

Finding a great pressing of Axis Bold as Love is very rare. 1st pressings that are in even decent condition are extremely rare. This is a superb example, with stunning audio, and stunning cover and a stunning vinyl. An un believable rarity and a great opportunity to own a top audio highly collectable press of the Hendrix classic. This is a fabulous opportunity to own a UK TRACK 1st press of this classic Hendrix album in stunning all round condition!

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
