MEMPHIS JUG BAND (Will Shade)
With the MEMPHIS SANCTIFIED SINGERS
THE BASICS LABEL : Victor 38559 ARTIST : Memphis Sanctified Singers SELECTIONS : The Great Reaping Day He Got Better Things For You RECORD DATE : October 1, 1929 CONDITION : E
Here’s another great southern gospel recording, this time dating from October of 1929. The group here is shown as the Memphis Sanctified Singers, and indeed they were from Memphis, and that’s where this recording was made.
The groups is basically the duo of Bessie Johnson and Elder Tarleton Roberts, but they’re joined here by Will Shade on guitar (Memphis Jug Band), as well as Sally Sumler and B, Taylor. This group didn’t record much, only two singles for Okeh, and this one for Victor. That’s it for this rarely heard group.
CONDITION: E (appears E+ but with some groove noise as you can hear)
