This auction is for an original 1949 Record and Book set of "THE ADVENTURES OF LITTLE BLACK SAMBO," narrated by Paul Wing, music by Norman Leydon, conducted by Henri Rene and copyrighted by the Radio Corporation of America - RCA Victor Division.

THE PERFECT TALKING BOOK NARRATED BY PAUL WING! READ! LOOK! AND LISTEN! IT'S THAT SIMPLE…….AND MAKES FOR A WONDERFUL COLLECTIBLE!!!!!

The Little Nipper series was an RCA Victor series of records aimed at children first issued in 1944 on 78 RPM, and then on 45 RPM in the 1950s.

In the 1950s, Little Nipper was especially used for "extended play" albums featuring only four or five songs. The Disney Studio released several short albums derived from their hit films, both musical and dramatic, on the "Little Nipper" series. These were two-record albums accompanied by a booklet slipcover featuring the spoken text of the album so that the young listener could follow along.

Nipper, the name of the RCA dog, helps in assisting the young readers to learn and listen, word for word, as they follow along with the brightly colored ILLUSTRATIONS in the book. The interior page sets the tone of the book where Mr. Wing introduces himself and LITTLE NIPPER. Every time Nipper barks (and you will see BARK-BARK- BARK at the bottom of each page), you turn the page and read along while listening to the records.

The Story of Little Black Sambo was a children's book by Helen Bannerman, who is originally from Scottland, and lived 30 years in Madras in southern India. The book was first published in London in 1899. The tale encounters an Indian boy named Sambo with all his adventures. The story was a children's favorite for half a century, but then became controversial due to the use of the word sambo, a racial slur in some countries. The original illustrations by Bannerman showed a caricatured Southern Indian or Tamil child. Unfortunately, The story may have also contributed to the use of the word "sambo" as a racial slur. Later editions showed Sambo to be more African-American in character illustrations as the racial tensions grew in this time period. This is noted in some editions with illustrations from the 1920's-1930's. We feel safe to assume by the author living in India, this story was inspired perhaps by the culture and routines of children with added imagination for entertainment value, not to be viewed as a racially challenged book, therefore making it enjoyable for young ones today.

Distributed in 1949, this complete book and record set is in GOOD CONDITION for its age; especially to be 63 YEARS OF AGE. It is an oblong folio (10 1/2" x 12") with 24 pages of COLORED ILLUSTRATIONS throughout. The exterior front cover board offers nice vibrant color as well. The back board has the RCA signature and logo. The spine is green. There are (2) 78 non-breakable records in the original rear pockets. I do not have a turn table to personally play the records so in all honesty, I can not grade the records quality or know of any skips or flaws. This collectible remains COMPLETE AND IS STILL A GOOD COPY! Pertaining to the interior pages, there is some interior foxing yet very mild. An upper margin stain bleeds through yet it is contained and small. It is also pictured for your personal observation. The only tear is found on the illustrated page of 9 at the bottom of the page. This book has good quality and firm hinges. There is shelf wear to boards and corners and the back cover does show damp stain which is referenced for your personal review in the pictures below.
